Makeup 101: Finding the Perfect Primer Episode 1

I realized when having a conversation with someone that, a lot of newbies in the makeup world don’t realize the importance of certain products. In my opinion and I say that because it’s simply that, my opinion and my experience primer is one of the most important products you could use. Outside of the fact that it helps to smooth your skin, mattify your skin, hides your pores, hydrate your skin and maybe even color corrects, they form a barrier between your skin and everything that you put on your face after. For skincare purposes, it’s always nice to have protective layer between your skin and your “base”. My routine is always to moisturize and then prime. With that being said, let’s get in to what primer is best for what face. These are all from Sephora but there are cheaper alternatives out there. These are just the basic types.

Oily/Textured/Acne Prone

I’m going to start off with my primer of choice, the Too Faced Primed and Poreless Skin Smoothing Face Primer. I have combo/oily, acne prone and textured skin.

toofacedprimerThe Claim:

What it is:
A makeup primer scientifically formulated to achieve the look of flawless skin without makeup.

What it does:
This one-of-a-kind makeup primer was scientifically formulated to wear alone or under bronzers and foundation powders for a look of flawless skin without makeup. Vitamins A & C, mulberry extract, and a powerful dose of Retinol virtually banish pores while tired skin is left hydrated, firmer, and detoxified. Primed & Poreless creates the perfect canvas to allow powders, bronzers, and foundations to slide seamlessly on the skin—delivering a flawless and perfectly blended look that stay in place all day. Skin appears brighter, fresher, and younger.

What else you need to know:
It looks great on any skintone! The nude tone becomes invisible once applied.

I can attest that this primer does EXACTLY what it claims. Pores? Gone! Textured skin? Smooth! Oily? Matte! It’s very soft and easy to blend also. Now, the price is a bit up there but this is still my go too and I’ve had it for at least a year. It’s not drying but it helps with oil control. This is hands down one of the best, that I have tried.

Dry Skin ( I use this to hydrate my skin)

Too Faced Hangover Rx

What it is:
A replenishing face primer that hydrates, smoothes, and brightens skin for a dewy, healthy looking finish.

What it does:
Cure your next beauty hangover with Hangover, a revolutionary makeup primer that’s infused with coconut water, a probiotic-based ingredient, and skin revivers which work together to boost skin’s radiance, promote elasticity, and help hydrate while locking down makeup for fresher, longer, and more flawless wear. Too Faced harnessed the science of hydration to create a creamy, penetrating primer that acts like an energy drink for the skin by replenishing moisture levels. It can be worn alone for a dewy, healthy looking finish, or under bronzers, foundations, and powders to create the perfect canvas.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
– Parabens
– Sulfates
– Phthalates

I literally just use this as a moisturizer however, this is also the perfect primer for someone who needs hydration. It’s important for those of use that have oily skin to moisturize but it’s even more important for those with dry skin to do so. This primer really makes my skin feel soft, supple, and it smells amazing. Still pricey but it last forever, that could be because I use it sparingly.

Dull Skin/Color Correcting

Radiant Primer Blue adds radiance to light skin.
Radiant Primer Pink adds radiance to light to medium skin.
Radiant Primer Yellow adds radiance to light to medium skin.
Radiant Primer Peach adds radiance to medium to tan skin.
Radiant Primer Caramel adds radiance to dark skin.

This is the type of primer that you use when you want your skin to have a healthy glow. I love that it includes a shade for most skin complexions. I say most because the caramel shade is the darkest and it wouldn’t do much for me. I have not tried this primer yet. I say yet because I would LOVE to try it but that $37.00 price tag got me like O_o.

  1. I have such oily skin, and I can never find a primer that helps! Urban Decays De Slick Oil control spray usually works well but I’m still desperate to find a great primer that helps my makeup stay on, and stops it from transferring onto everything! Have you got any suggestions?

    1. My skin is oily also…I would suggest doubling up. Use the urban decay deslick before make up and use a good mattifying primer. Use the deslick again after and make sure you set you foundation with an actual setting powder. It also helps to keep transfer at bay when I take a paper towel and blot my face to suck up any access oil. Hope this helps boo!
